NHS Veterans’ Mental Health Services Now Available for Armed Forces Personnel Approaching Discharge

Information for patients

Armed forces personnel approaching discharge can now get treatment and support at NHS veterans’ mental health services across England and thereafter into their civilian life, whether this is months or years later.

If you are experiencing mental health difficulties, these services can provide a range of treatment and support in close liaison with Defence Medical Services (DMS).  This includes recognising the early signs of mental health problems and providing access to early treatment and support, as well as therapeutic treatment for complex mental health difficulties and psychological trauma.  Patients are also provided with help, where appropriate, with employment, reduction in alcohol consumption, housing and social support.

To access these services whilst you are still in the armed forces, you must meet the following criteria:

·         be a resident in England
·         have an identified or diagnosed mental health illness / disorder; AND
·         have a discharge date from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) or be found to be unfit for continued military service by their medical board; OR
·         have been identified by the Departments of Community Mental Health as requiring follow on psychiatric care on discharge from the MOD; OR
·         have had their pre-release medical and been identified by their DMS GP as requiring mental health transition support; OR
·         have had a pre-release medical before they self-refer.

If you wish to access these services once you are a veteran, you must meet the following criteria instead:

Horseboxes, Trailers & Caravans

Your latest Smart Alert.

As with other equipment photograph your horsebox/trailer.

Ensure it is immobilised when parked, but that it can be brought into use quickly in the event of an emergency.

Use wheel clamps, hitch locks, car alarms or immobilisers.

Consider having your trailer security marked with you post code.

Personalise your vehicle(s). Park them where you can see them, preferably in an area which is lit up at night or has intruder security lighting.

Thefts of horseboxes, trailers and caravans have presented more of a problem over the past few years but with modern security devices fitted they are certainly a lot harder for the thief to steal.

Extended Free Childcare Entitlement in Overseas Locations

1.               In overseas locations the MOD provides services (or access to services) that, so far as is reasonably practicable, conform in type, scope and standard to that required by legislation in England (but paying due regard to the equivalent legislation in the Devolved Administrations).
2.               The 2006 Childcare Act provided for 15 hours of childcare per week for 38 weeks of the year for 3 and 4 year olds free of charge.  In overseas locations the MOD currently delivers this entitlement through places at MOD-provided settings or through access to the MOD Overseas Nursery Allowance.
3.         The 2016 Childcare Act provides for an extension of the current entitlement and offers an additional 15 hours per week for 38 weeks of the year of free childcare for children that are eligible, with effect from 1 September 2017.
4.         The additional 15 hours will be available to families where both parents are working (or the sole parent is working in a lone parent family) a minimum of 16 hours each per week. Parents each earning £100,000.00 or more do not qualify for the additional entitlement.

Help Shape the Future of Policing in Stafford

Your latest Smart Alert.

People aged 18 and over in Stafford are being urged to step forward to join their local Safer Neighbourhood Panel (SNP) to help hold the Local Police Commander to account and look at wider criminal justice and community safety issues in their area.

Staffordshire's PCC Matthew Ellis, who launched the Safer Neighbourhood Panels in 2015, said: 'This is a real opportunity for people in Stafford to play a part in holding those responsible for policing in their area to account and I'd urge them to get involved.

'I make no apology for believing that truly local policing, and the public playing a part in influencing that, is vital. The spotlight and scrutiny on local policing performance that SNPs bring is invaluable in adding to the rigour I have introduced to overseeing policing.'

Steve Frodsham, from Stafford SNP added: 'SNPs perform a vital role in ensuring that the work of our local police service is visible to and held accountable by the community it serves.

'We're really keen that the Stafford panel is representative of the whole community, and are looking for volunteers of all ages, backgrounds and experience to join us and play an active role in scrutinising and challenging the work of the police.

'Acting as a 'critical friend' we scrutinise a range of policing activity and meet with the local commander every three months to question him on what we consider to be the most important issues.'

Local residents and members of the business community sit on the panels to influence local policing and community safety, scrutinise the work done by police in their area, give feedback to communities and examine the impact of community resolutions and restorative justice.

Anyone interested in joining their local SNP should register their interest at or contact Zoe Baker, panel co-ordinator, on 01785 619309.

Tax-Free Childcare

Tax-Free Childcare

Tax-Free Childcare will be available to millions of working families across the UK, and over time it will replace childcare vouchers, which will close to new entrants from April 2018. Voucher schemes remain open to existing members.

Eligible parents with children under 12 (under 17 for disabled children) will be able to set up an online childcare account to pay their childcare providers directly. For every £8 parents pay in, the Government will add £2, up to a maximum contribution of £2,000 per child, per year (£4,000 per year for disabled children). To qualify, parents must be in work, this includes self-employment, and each expected to work a minimum of 16 hours per week and earn no more than £100,000 per year.

Using the Childcare Checker, parents will be able to find out which providers have signed up in their area. The scheme will gradually become available to different age groups from 28 April 2017 with all eligible parents being able to access the scheme by the end of 2017.

Parents who have registered with the ‘keep me updated’ tool will be notified when they become eligible.

Childcare providers have a pivotal role in Tax-Free Childcare. They need to sign up so that parents can use Tax-Free Childcare to pay them; thousands have already done so.

To find out more about the new and existing offers, including the introduction of 30 Hours free childcare from September 2017 for eligible working parents and how they can help you, go to the Childcare Choices website at where you will find the childcare calculator to help you compare the government’s childcare offers and check what works best for your family.

MOD personnel based within the United Kingdom will have the same access to these new Childcare Choices as any other citizen, in line with the Armed Forces Covenant. Since 2013 the Ministry of Defence has been working closely with other government departments to ensure that these changes to childcare choices can be mirrored, so far as it is reasonably practicable to do so, for entitled MOD personnel based outside the United Kingdom. Full details of the required changes or additions to MOD policies will be published shortly, once the changes have been published on the Government’s Childcare Choices webpage.

Injured Veterans Military Compensation

Following English, Welsh and Scottish Government announcements this year, injured veterans in England, Scotland and Wales will no longer have to surrender most of their military compensation to pay for their social care from 2017.

By contacting their MPs about this issue, our supporters were instrumental in persuading their Government to protect injured veterans’ compensation payments. Thank you to everyone who gave their support; the new changes really will make a huge difference to thousands of
injured veterans.

AFF Secures Better Access to Student Loans for Army Spouses and Partners

The Army Families Federation (AFF) is celebrating a change to Student Finance England's loan qualifying criteria, which will allow more Army families to access a loan when undertaking a UK based course.

As of 1 August 2017, families posted overseas who wish to undertake a qualifying UK based university or college course can now access a loan via Student Finance England even if they are not in the UK on the first day of their chosen course. This applies to both full and part time courses.

An AFF win
This AFF win was originally announced by the Universities Minister Jo Johnson back in 2016, after much lobbying by the charity and joint working with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

The change applies to new students starting a distance learning course in 2017/18 and also to those who have already started a distance learning course before and who are continuing that course in 2017/18.

Unfortunately, this does not apply to those from the devolved nations. To be eligible, you must qualify for the English student support package.

Putting families first
AFF continues to prioritise spousal employment and training, and this includes those posted overseas who sometimes cannot work and so choose to undertake a course during that time.
AFF Chief Executive Sara Baade said: "AFF is delighted that the new, more inclusive student funding rules have now come into force; Armed Forces families who are posted abroad will now have access to the same opportunities as those living in the UK, when accessing Student Finance England loans. We look forward to seeing the positive impact on military spouses this change will bring."
