MOD Veterans UK - Changes to Helpline Opening Hours

Changes to our helpline opening hours take effect on Monday 31 October 2016.

The opening hours for the Veterans UK helpline service will change to 8.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday.

Analysis has shown that there are relatively few calls received in the early morning and evening and so the service has been re-organised to make more advisers available during our busiest times.

Callers phoning outside of these hours will still be offered an option to speak to our partners in the charities Combat Stress or The Samaritans where urgent assistance is needed.

BBC iPlayer – TV Licence

A change in the law – You need a TV Licence for BBC iPlayer
As of 1 September 2016, a change in the law means you need to be covered by a TV Licence to download or watch BBC programmes on demand - including catch up TV - on BBC iPlayer. This applies to all devices, including a smart TV, desktop computer or laptop, mobile phone, tablet, digital box or games console.

TV Licence: Armed Forces Personnel

Find out how to check if you need a TV Licence when you’re on base, what it covers and how much it costs.

A TV Licence is not included in your monthly food and accommodation charges. In Ministry of Defence (MOD) living accommodation, on or off base, you need to be covered by a TV Licence if you watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV – on any device. That includes TVs, computers, tablets, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and DVD/VHS recorders.
It’s your responsibility to check if you need a TV Licence and buy one if you do. The Ministry of Defence fully supports us in applying the law regarding TV Licensing. If we find evidence you’re watching TV illegally, you risk prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.
A TV Licence costs £145.50. You can spread the cost with a Direct Debit or pay in one go.

Carillionamey - Combating Condensation in Your Service Family Accommodation

Take immediate action if you notice any condensation or mould:

Condensation is the water produced when warm moist air or steam meets a cold surface such as windows, walls or floors. You might think that you have leaking windows or damp, but condensation can often be a problem in new or newly refurbished houses – with draught free windows and efficient heating. To control condensation and any associated mould, sources of water vapour need to be reduced to a minimum, whilst establishing the right balance between heating and ventilation.

If you have taken all of the actions in the diagram below and you believe the issue is due to maintenance or the condition of the property, such as a damaged roof or guttering, please contact the CarillionAmey Helpdesk on 0800 707 6000 option 1

Forces Help to Buy Scheme Extended

The Secretary of State for Defence today announced the excellent news that the very popular Forces Help To Buy scheme will be extended into 2018. As you will be aware, the scheme which was launched in 2014, allows serving military personnel to borrow up to half their salary up to a cap of £25,000, interest free over ten years so they can buy their first home, extend a current one or move up the property ladder.

The news is featured on the Armed Forces Covenant website and includes comments from L/Cpl Baffour Asante whose family has benefited from the scheme.
